Sleepless on the Alsek

The Alsek River begins in the Yukon Territory, flowing through Northern British Columbia and SE Alaska, entering the Gulf of Alaska at Dry Bay, just south of Yakutat.  The Alsek and its main tributary, the Tatshenshini, combine to form one of the largest drainages on the west coast of North and South America, with flows upwards of 100,000 CFS by the time it reaches the Pacific Ocean. The Alsek is a Canadian Heritage River and within a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, flowing through Kluane National Park, Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park, and Glacier Bay National Park, forming the largest international protected area in the world.

Geologically rich, wildlife rich. Calving glaciers, hanging glaciers, towering mountains, iceberg laden lakes. Grizzly, moose, black bear, wood bison, fox, lynx, cougar, dall sheep, mountain goat, mink, wolverine, salmon, eagle, osprey, swan and more. Thirty four degree water in constant motion. The earth’s hydrological cycle at its best.

Eye candy 24 hours/day, 12 days, 155 miles. Truly a bucket list adventure if you are indeed of the wilderness wanderlust type. Epic, life-changing.  I found myself consumed. Sleepless.

Just don’t forget to take your raincoat and muck boots.

These photos will not be found hiding under the ‘purchase’ button. Should you wish to learn more about possible availability for whatever cause, please don’t hesitate to make contact.  As there are many more photos in my inventory than what is shown here, you might also check back from time to time, as I hope to rotate through them periodically.

One last note:  float access to both the Alsek and Tatshenshini are regulated, by permit only. Rarely will you see other folks. Truly wilderness, and intended to be kept that way.

Should you have further interest in learning more about this unforgettable float, perhaps visit ‘wildernessriver.com’.  Seth and his crew have over two decades of personal experience with this river drainage. Don’t let this one get past you!
